The numerous environments are variated and often have the appearance of video games.
Multiple effects of lights, fog, configurable terrain, animation of avatars (personages), several camera modes, etc...
You can use Active Worlds free of charge and for an as long period as you desire, but with limited options.
You can also register, becoming an Active Worlds citizen and gain access to all the options.
Any person connected is represented as an avatar (personage) for which the appearance changes from world to world and which you can choose from list depending on your mood in registered mode.
Active Worlds is also a complete chat system, offering chat possibilities with other connected people.
If you would rather prefer creating than visiting the creations of others, nothing will hold you back from owning your own virtual world, which you can build in with free objects, free textures etc.. made available to you, or by creating your own 3D objects and textures.
It is difficult to explain in an exhaustive manner all possibilities offerd by this program as it addresses itself to visitors of all ages, 2D artists, 3D gurus, to 3D video and online game creators as well as chatters.

For people searching a more technical adventure, a SDK library is free available which can be used to add even more interactivity to your world and can for example be used for the creation of your own games.
